Where your day starts decides more than the boat. Here is our pick for each starting point and the criteria behind it.
The short answer
If you drive to Milford yourself, the best choice for most people is a 2-hour cruise on a smaller boat: Mitre Peak Cruises runs boats with 60 or 75 places out to the Tasman Sea, with a last departure at 15:55 from October to April. Coming from Queenstown, a small-group day such as Cheeky Kiwi Travel (hotel pickup, smaller boat, picnic lunch) is our pick over a full coach.
From Te Anau the day is about 8 hours instead of 12, and the Fiordland Trips and Tramps small group adds short walks to a 2-hour small-boat cruise. If you want to see the fiord from the air and save the long drive, fly-cruise-fly from Queenstown takes about 5 hours.

There is no single best boat on Milford Sound. The cruises cover the same water, from the Visitor Terminal past Mitre Peak to the Tasman Sea and back. What separates a good day from a long one is how you get there, how many people share the boat and how much time you spend on the water.
From Queenstown, a coach or van day to Milford and back runs to about 12 hours, most of it on the Milford Road. From Te Anau the same day takes about 8 hours. Driving yourself, plan on 5 to 6 hours each way from Queenstown or about 3 hours from Te Anau, and book a cruise from the terminal. If the drive is the part you would rather skip, fly-cruise-fly from Queenstown replaces it with two scenic flights of about 30 to 40 minutes. Queenstown or Te Anau compared.
Day cruises last between about 90 minutes and 2 hours 15 minutes. Cruise Milford takes at most 75 passengers per departure, Mitre Peak Cruises sails boats with 60 or 75 places, and the larger catamarans carry far more. The longest day cruise is Discover More by Southern Discoveries, with a nature guide on board for the whole trip. Small-boat cruises.
Rain does not spoil Milford Sound. It fills the cliffs with temporary waterfalls, and rain alone does not cancel a cruise. Scenic flights depend more on the weather; if one is cancelled, you get another flight or a refund. Glass-roof coaches and boats help on wet days, and premium options such as MV Sinbad (capacity capped at half, a glass of champagne, canapés) add comfort rather than a different view.
