The original Milford operator

Southern Discoveries

Started as Milford Sound Red Boats in 1954 — the first commercial cruise operator on Milford. Qualmark Gold-endorsed, and one of the most affordable scenic cruises on GetYourGuide.

Southern Discoveries traces its history to the Milford Sound Red Boats, launched shortly after the Homer Tunnel opened in 1953/54 — making it the original Milford Sound cruise operator. Owned since 2008 by the Skeggs Group (family-owned, Dunedin-based) and holds a Qualmark Gold Sustainable Tourism endorsement.

The Nature Cruise is Southern Discoveries' signature: a 1 h 45 min cruise on a purpose-built catamaran with 75-passenger caps, expert commentary via a multilingual app, and optional buffet or picnic lunch. Two departures — 09:00 from Deepwater Basin and 10:30 from the Visitor Centre. Southern Discoveries was historically also known for the Milford Sound Underwater Observatory in Harrison Cove, but that facility is currently unavailable after being partially submerged in September 2024.

About this tour

The Nature Cruise is Southern Discoveries' flagship — a 1 h 45 to 2-hour trip on a boat purpose-built for the fiord, capped at 75 passengers on a vessel that could hold more. Departures leave from Deepwater Basin at 09:00 and from the Visitor Terminal at 10:30.

The route runs the full 16 km length of Milford Sound: past Bowen Falls, under the sheer face of Mitre Peak, past Copper Point (New Zealand fur seals), to the Tasman Sea, and back via Stirling Falls. The skipper narrates in English; a free operator app plays synchronised commentary in eight languages via GPS.

Practical: covered indoor lounge with large windows, spacious outdoor deck, licensed on-board bar. Picnic and buffet lunch options must be pre-booked (24 h ahead). Free tea and coffee. The Underwater Observatory in Harrison Cove was damaged in September 2024 and is not part of this cruise for now.
