If your itinerary allows a night in Te Anau, the coach + cruise from there is the better version of the same trip. Two and a half hours of driving each way instead of four from Queenstown, the same 2-hour cruise, and Te Anau itself is a pleasant Fiordland lake town worth an overnight. Most operators offer both Queenstown and Te Anau departures.

A 7.5-hour day trip from the RealNZ visitor centre on the Te Anau lakefront. The glass-roof coach takes about two and a half hours to Milford Sound, with photo stops in the Eglinton Valley, at the Mirror Lakes and at Monkey Creek, and short walks along the way.
You choose the cruise when booking. The Classic cruise lasts 1 h 40 on one of RealNZ's larger boats built for comfort and stability, with multilingual commentary through the RealNZ Milford Sound app. The Signature cruise lasts 2 hours on one of RealNZ's character vessels, with a live nature guide (in English) and barista coffee and local craft beer at the bar. Both run the full length of the fiord; seals, dolphins and penguins are possible.

At Milford Sound you board a purpose-built catamaran for the Nature Cruise: past Mitre Peak and Bowen Falls, into the spray of Stirling Falls, on to Copper Point, where fur seals often rest on the rocks, and out to the Tasman Sea. Fiordland crested penguins nest along the shore in season. The app also covers the cruise.
