Milford Sound Tours
The rainproof choice

Pure Milford

The only operator with a glass-roof vessel. Best-selling coach + cruise from Queenstown on GetYourGuide — live rating and review count shown on the product cards.

Pure Milford is the rebrand of JUCY Cruise, launched in 2021 following the significant COVID-driven downturn in New Zealand tourism. Post-rebrand, cruise duration went from 90 minutes to 2 hours, and passenger capacity was halved — the operator now runs deliberately at 50% capacity as a "slow-down" premium mid-market positioning.

The fleet: Maiden of Milford (spacious, open top deck, 360° views) and — the standout — Gem of the Sound, the only glass-roof three-level catamaran in Milford Sound. This makes Pure Milford the go-to choice for wet-weather days when the mountains are wrapped in cloud and rain is streaming off the cliffs. A licensed café/bar operates on both vessels.

  • 2-hour cruise on Pure Milford (Maiden of Milford or the glass-roof Gem of the Sound)

About this tour

The 12-hour Queenstown day is the most-booked Milford trip on GetYourGuide. Pickup is 06:30–07:00 in central Queenstown; you're back by around 19:30. The coach is a glass-roof vehicle with photo stops along the Milford Road (Mirror Lakes, the Chasm, Homer Tunnel approach).

The cruise is Pure Milford's 2-hour Nature Cruise on either the Maiden of Milford (open upper deck) or the Gem of the Sound (three-storey glass roof). You don't choose the boat — it depends on the departure — but both handle Milford well, and the glass-roof Gem is unbeatable on rainy days.

You'll spend ~5 hours on the coach each way, ~2 hours on the water, and ~1.5 hours at photo stops and terminal check-in. Bring layers, a rain jacket, camera and cash for the on-board bar (lunch not included; buy on board or bring your own).

What's included

  • Round-trip transport from central Queenstown
  • Glass-roof, air-conditioned coach
  • Driver commentary and scenic photo stops
  • 2-hour Pure Milford scenic cruise
  • Complimentary tea and hot water on board
  • Access to 3 viewing decks on the boat

Not included

  • Lunch
  • Breakfast
  • Additional drinks (available for purchase on board)

Meeting point

Central Queenstown pickup — the exact location and time are confirmed after booking. The tour departure time in your voucher is NOT the pickup time; pickup can be up to 45 minutes earlier depending on where you stay.

What to bring

  • Warm layered clothing
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Camera
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent (sandflies at photo stops)

Know before you go

  • The tour departure time is not the pickup time — check your confirmation for the pickup slot.
  • Full return from Queenstown to Milford is 580 km — expect a long day.
  • The 15-minute Tasman Sea section can be choppy in bad weather — see our seasickness guide if prone.
  • Milford has near-zero phone reception; download your voucher offline.
  • Boat allocation (Maiden vs. Gem) depends on the departure — ask at check-in if the glass roof matters to you.

Highlights

  • 4 hours shorter than the Queenstown version (2h drive each way, not 4h)
  • Picnic lunch on board included
  • Same 2-hour Pure Milford cruise (Maiden of Milford or Gem of the Sound)
  • Photo stops and short walks in Fiordland National Park
  • Central Te Anau pickup — no early-morning start

About this tour

The Te Anau version of Pure Milford's coach + cruise is the calmer sibling of the Queenstown day. Same cruise, same operator, but 4 hours less driving because Te Anau is 2 hours closer to Milford. If you can sleep a night in Te Anau, this is the version to book.

Pickup is in central Te Anau at the Kiwi Country / Hollyford Cafe (meet in the cafe section). The coach heads north up the Milford Road with scenic photo stops — Mirror Lakes, Monkey Creek, the Homer Tunnel approach — and short nature walks. Driver narrates in English.

At Milford you board Pure Milford's Nature Cruise for 2 hours on the fiord. A picnic lunch is served on board — one advantage over the Queenstown version, where lunch is a paid extra. Full return day: about 8 hours.

What's included

  • Pickup and drop-off in central Te Anau
  • 2-hour Pure Milford scenic cruise
  • Live commentary from drivers and skippers
  • Scenic photo stops and short walks in Fiordland National Park
  • Picnic lunch on board

Not included

  • Alcoholic drinks (available on board)
  • Overnight in Te Anau

Meeting point

Kiwi Country / Hollyford Cafe, Te Anau. Meet your driver in the cafe section of the building.

What to bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent

Know before you go

  • Te Anau to Milford is about 3 hours including stops — much easier than the Queenstown route.
  • Bring rain gear even in summer — Fiordland weather is unpredictable.
  • Te Anau has no airport; get there by rental car or InterCity bus from Queenstown (~2h).
  • Same-day availability is more realistic here than from Queenstown in peak season.

FAQ

When did JUCY become Pure Milford?

The rebrand happened in 2021. Chris Alpe (JUCY founder) still holds a 25% stake in Pure Milford.

Which vessel is the glass-roof one?

The Gem of the Sound — a three-level purpose-built catamaran with a transparent roof over the main viewing deck. The Maiden of Milford is the other vessel with a traditional open top deck.

How do the departure times work?

Standalone cruises run 09:30 (~NZ$152), 12:00 and 13:30 (~NZ$176). Coach + cruise packages are timed differently to fit the Queenstown or Te Anau bus schedules.

Is there a fee difference between the vessels?

Same price. You cannot choose the vessel at booking — it depends on the sailing. If glass-roof is a must, verify at check-in that you'll be on Gem of the Sound.

What's the deal with the Coach + Cruise product on GetYourGuide?

Product t188556 is the most-reviewed Milford day trip on GetYourGuide. Glass-roof coach, spectacular photo stops on the Milford Road, cruise + optional lunch. Live rating and review count on the card above.
