Milford Sound Tours
Founded 1954

RealNZ

The market leader. 70 years on the fiord, Air NZ Supreme Tourism Award 2024, and the classic overnight cruise on the Milford Mariner.

RealNZ is the largest and oldest operator on Milford Sound. Founded in 1954 as the Manapouri-Doubtful Sound Tourist Company by the Hutchins family, rebranded Real Journeys in 2002, then RealNZ in 2021. The company also runs Doubtful Sound, the Te Anau Glowworm Caves, Stewart Island cruises and the Cardrona and Treble Cone ski fields.

On Milford Sound, RealNZ operates a fleet of Classic Catamarans (up to 180 passengers), Signature vessels with barista coffee and craft beer, and the flagship Milford Mariner — the classic overnight cruise, 64 passengers in 32 cabins. Signature product on GetYourGuide: the 12-hour coach + cruise day trip from Queenstown, one of the most-booked Milford tours (live rating and review count on the card below).

  • Air New Zealand Supreme Tourism Award winner (2024)
  • Glass-roof coach with well-timed scenic stops along the Milford Road
  • 2-hour cruise on a RealNZ Classic Catamaran (up to 180 pax — the most stable ride)
  • Barista coffee, craft beer and lunch options on board
  • Run by the operator with 70+ years at Milford (since 1954)

About this tour

RealNZ (formerly Real Journeys) has been running Milford since 1954 and picked up Air New Zealand's Supreme Tourism Award in 2024. Their Queenstown coach + cruise uses a glass-roof coach with photo stops along Lake Whakatipu, Te Anau, Mirror Lakes and the Homer Tunnel — driver commentary throughout.

At Milford you board a RealNZ Classic Catamaran, the largest boat operating on the fiord (up to 180 passengers). Trade-off: less small-boat intimacy than Mitre Peak or Cruise Milford, but the most stable ride if you're prone to motion sickness in the Tasman Sea section. Nature guides narrate the wildlife, geology and preservation story.

On board: barista coffee, craft beer, a licensed bar and lunch options for purchase — bring your own if you'd rather. Return to Queenstown around 19:30.

What's included

  • Round-trip coach from central Queenstown
  • Glass-roof, air-conditioned coach

  • 2-hour Milford Sound nature cruise on a RealNZ Classic Catamaran
  • Access to on-board licensed bar for food and drink purchase

Not included

  • Lunch (available for purchase on board)

The RealNZ Visitor Centre, Steamer Wharf, 88 Beach Street, Queenstown. Check in 30 minutes before departure to collect your boarding pass.

What to bring

  • Warm layered clothing
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Sunglasses
  • Camera

Know before you go

  • Check in 30 minutes before departure — you cannot board without your boarding pass.
  • Bring rain gear even if the forecast is dry — Fiordland weather turns fast.
  • Alternative vessels or coaches may be used during survey periods.
  • For dietary requirements, contact RealNZ directly ahead of departure.
  • The 15-minute Tasman Sea section is usually calm on RealNZ Classic (largest boat, most stable).

Full tour details

Highlights

  • 64 passengers in 32 cabins — the classic overnight option on Milford
  • Guided kayak or tender-boat outing on arrival at Harrison Cove
  • Buffet dinner and continental breakfast prepared by an onboard chef
  • Wake up on the fiord — the day-cruise crowd is long gone
  • Runs year-round (weather permitting) — unlike the Fiordland Discovery Jewel

About this tour

Board the Milford Mariner at 16:00 and cruise to a sheltered anchorage in Harrison Cove — the classic Milford overnight. The day-tripper crowd is gone by then, and you get the fiord to yourself for kayaking, tender-boat exploration or (if you're brave) a swim off the boat.

Dinner is a carvery buffet prepared onboard by the chef. Ensuite twin/double cabins are standard; budget quad-share bunks are cheapest. Nature-guide commentary in English covers the fiord's geology, wildlife and preservation story.

Overnight the boat stays at anchor in the sheltered cove. Continental breakfast, then a morning cruise back out to the Tasman Sea (weather permitting) before disembarking at 09:15.

Trade-off vs. Fiordland Discovery Jewel: Mariner is roughly a third of the Jewel's price, three times the guests, no hot tub — but runs year-round and has the classic Milford overnight experience nailed.

What's included

  • Overnight cabin with ensuite (twin/double) or budget bunk (quad-share)
  • Guided kayak or tender-boat outing at Harrison Cove
  • Nature-guide commentary in English
  • Three-course buffet dinner
  • Continental breakfast

Not included

  • Alcoholic drinks and soft drinks (available on board)
  • Transport to/from Milford Sound

Meeting point

Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, Southland 9679. Exchange your voucher at the RealNZ counter for your boarding pass — check-in 30 minutes before boarding.

What to bring

  • Overnight bag with change of clothes
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Warm layers
  • Swimwear (if you plan to swim or use the kayak)
  • Camera

Know before you go

  • Water activities (kayak, tender boat, swim) are weather-dependent.
  • Children from age 5 welcome; family cabins available.
  • Sheltered anchorage means calm sleep — Milford weather rarely disrupts overnight rest.
  • Cancellation notice is 14 days, not 24 hours — plan accordingly.
  • Runs year-round, but winter (May–Sep) can see weather-related sailing adjustments.
