The Nature Cruise is Southern Discoveries' flagship — a 1 h 45 to 2-hour trip on a boat purpose-built for the fiord, capped at 75 passengers on a vessel that could hold more. Departures leave from Deepwater Basin at 09:00 and from the Visitor Terminal at 10:30.

The route runs the full 16 km length of Milford Sound: past Bowen Falls, under the sheer face of Mitre Peak, past Copper Point (New Zealand fur seals), to the Tasman Sea, and back via Stirling Falls. The skipper narrates in English; a free operator app plays synchronised commentary in eight languages via GPS.

Practical: covered indoor lounge with large windows, spacious outdoor deck, licensed on-board bar. Picnic and buffet lunch options must be pre-booked (24 h ahead). Free tea and coffee. The Underwater Observatory in Harrison Cove was damaged in September 2024 and is not part of this cruise for now.

Mitre Peak Cruises runs two vessels — the M.V. Mitre Peak (60 pax) and M.V. Mitre Peak II (75 pax) — purpose-built for tight cliff and waterfall approaches. They are the smallest boats operating regular Milford day cruises, and it shows: waterfalls feel close enough to touch, seal rocks pass within camera range.

The 2-hour route runs the full length of the fiord past Lady Bowen Falls, Lion Mountain, Copper Point, Seal Rock and Stirling Falls to the Tasman Sea, then returns. The skipper narrates in English between highlights. Summer (Oct–Apr) runs four departures a day; the 15:55 slot is unique to Mitre Peak — later than any other operator — giving you softer afternoon light and, often, an empty fiord.

The 12-hour Queenstown day is the most-booked Milford trip on GetYourGuide. Pickup is 06:30–07:00 in central Queenstown; you're back by around 19:30. The coach is a glass-roof vehicle with photo stops along the Milford Road (Mirror Lakes, the Chasm, Homer Tunnel approach).

The cruise is Pure Milford's 2-hour Nature Cruise on either the Maiden of Milford (open upper deck) or the Gem of the Sound (three-storey glass roof). You don't choose the boat — it depends on the departure — but both handle Milford well, and the glass-roof Gem is unbeatable on rainy days.
