How to get from Te Anau to Milford Sound

Te Anau is the last town before the fiord. From here it is two hours on the Milford Road, with no fuel and little phone signal along the way.

The short answer

From Te Anau it is about 120 km to Milford Sound on State Highway 94, the Milford Road, and the drive takes about two hours each way without stops. Driving yourself with stops and a cruise fills about eight hours. The InterCity bus takes about three hours each way, and a coach + cruise tour from Te Anau takes 7.5 to 8 hours door to door. Fill the tank in Te Anau, because there is no fuel between there and Milford Sound.

Driving the Milford Road from Te Anau

The road leaves Te Anau along the lake shore, turns into the Eglinton Valley and climbs to the Homer Tunnel before dropping steeply to the fiord. It is sealed the whole way and ends at the Milford Sound cruise terminal.

120 kmTe Anau to Milford Sound, one way
2 hDriving time each way, no stops
0Fuel stations after Te Anau
945 mHomer Tunnel entrance above sea level

Before you leave, fill up and buy food and drinks in Te Anau: there are no shops or fuel stations on the way, and mobile coverage is patchy soon after town. Bring insect repellent for the stops. Toilets are at Knobs Flat and at Milford.

Where to stop between Te Anau and the fiord

  • Mirror Lakes, a five-minute boardwalk. Go early, when there is no wind and the reflections are clearest.
  • Knobs Flat in the Eglinton Valley: toilets, a card phone and a board with the current road conditions.
  • Lake Gunn, with a short nature walk through beech forest.
  • The Homer Tunnel, 1.2 km long and single lane. In summer, traffic lights can hold you for up to 20 minutes. Kea are endangered, so do not feed them however close they come.
  • The Chasm, a short forest walk on the far side of the tunnel, where the Cleddau River has worn holes through the rock.

Do not stop between the Hollyford Road junction and The Chasm. That stretch is an avalanche area and a no-stopping zone.

Timing the day

The coach tours from Queenstown reach Milford Sound around lunchtime, timed for their cruises. From Te Anau you are close enough to beat them: leave early and you can take a morning cruise before the terminal fills, or drive in after lunch for one of the last sailings. Allow daylight for the drive back.

In winter, from May to September, the road can be icy and snow chains may be required. You can rent them in Te Anau. The Department of Conservation suggests not leaving before 9 am in winter, and the NZ Transport Agency publishes the current status of State Highway 94, including avalanche closures. If you are not comfortable on snow, take a tour or the bus.

The bus without a tour

InterCity runs a daily bus from Te Anau to Milford Sound that takes about three hours. It suits walkers heading for a track and anyone staying the night at Milford Sound, either at the Lodge or on an overnight cruise.
